Local SEO and Google Maps for California contractors

Show up when people search for your trade in the cities you serve. I tune your Google Business Profile, build trusted listings, and add the local pages Google needs to rank you.

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the work that gets your business found when someone nearby searches for what you do. Think "plumber in Lancaster" or "fire sprinkler inspection Bakersfield."

Those searches show two kinds of results. First, a map with a short list of businesses, usually three. Then the regular website results below it. Local SEO works on both.

How does Google decide who shows up in the map?

Google says it ranks local results on three things:

  • Relevance: how well your listing and website match what the person searched for.
  • Distance: how close your business is to the searcher or the city they named.
  • Prominence: how well known and trusted you are. That comes from Google reviews, links, listings, and your website.

You can't move your shop closer to every customer. But you can improve relevance and prominence, and that's where I focus.

What's included in local SEO?

The same steps I use to build my own contractor lead sites, applied to your business.

  • Google Business Profile setup and cleanup. The right categories, services, service area, hours, photos, and a description that matches how people search.
  • Consistent business listings. Your name, address, and phone number match on every directory that matters, from Yelp and Bing to trade-specific sites.
  • A listing tracker. A spreadsheet of every directory, its status, and its login, so nothing gets lost.
  • City and service pages. Real local pages on your contractor website, so Google can match you to each town you serve.
  • Schema markup. LocalBusiness and FAQ code that tells search engines your service area and services.
  • Review growth. A simple request after every job, because reviews count toward prominence.
  • Monthly posts and photos. Fresh activity on your profile that shows you're active.
  • Plain-English reports. Calls, form leads, and where you rank in the cities you care about.

How does local SEO work month to month?

  1. Audit

I check your profile, listings, website, reviews, and the businesses ranking above you.

  2. Fix the basics

Categories, listing errors, and missing pages get fixed first, because they're the quickest wins.

  3. Build authority

New listings, city pages, and reviews add up month after month.

  4. Report and adjust

You see calls and rankings each month, and the plan shifts toward what's working.

What affects the cost of local SEO?

You get a fixed monthly price in writing after the free review. These are the factors that set it.

Cost factorWhy it matters
Number of citiesEach city needs its own page and its own ranking work.
Competition in your tradeRoofing in Los Angeles takes more work than backflow testing in a small town.
Starting pointA new profile with no reviews needs more groundwork than an established one.
Website conditionIf your site is slow or thin, it needs fixing before rankings can grow.
Number of locationsEach real office or shop location gets its own Google profile to manage.

What can go wrong with local SEO?

Some shortcuts get Google profiles suspended. I don't use them.

  • Fake addresses. Virtual offices and mailbox addresses break Google's rules for business profiles and can get your profile removed.
  • Keyword-stuffed business names. Adding "Best Plumber Lancaster" to your name is against the rules too.
  • Bought or fake reviews. Google removes them, and the FTC can fine businesses for fake reviews.
  • Mismatched listings. Old phone numbers and addresses across directories confuse Google and customers.

Questions to ask any SEO company

Whether you hire me or someone else, get clear answers to these first.

  1. Will I own my Google Business Profile and every listing you create?
  2. What exactly will you do each month?
  3. How will you report calls and leads, not just traffic?
  4. Do you use any tactics that break Google's guidelines?
  5. What happens to my listings if I stop working with you?

Local SEO questions

How long does local SEO take to work?

Fixing your Google Business Profile and listing errors can help within weeks. Ranking near the top for competitive searches usually takes several months of steady work. Your trade, your cities, and how many reviews your competitors have all change the timeline.

Can I rank in cities where I don't have an office?

Yes, with the right setup. If you travel to customers, Google lets you set a service area instead of showing your address. City pages on your website help you show up in the towns you serve.

Do you need my Google Business Profile login?

No. You add me as a manager from your own account. You stay the owner, and you can remove my access at any time.

What's the difference between local SEO and Google Ads?

Google Ads charges you for each click, and the calls stop when you stop paying. Local SEO takes longer to build, but the rankings keep bringing in calls without paying per click. Many contractors use both while their rankings grow.

Do I need a website for local SEO?

You can rank in the map with only a Google profile, but it's much harder. Your website is where Google checks what you do and where you work. Strong service and city pages make a big difference.
